Pizza dough may be traced back to ancient civilizations in the Mediterranean region, including the Greeks and Egyptians. These civilizations were famous for their early flatbreads, which served as a forerunner to current pizza dough. The Greeks frequently covered their flatbreads with olive oil and fresh herbs, whilst the Egyptians used them as a basis for other toppings like onions and garlic. These flatbreads developed and expanded throughout the region through time, eventually reaching Italy. Pizza, as we know it now, began to take shape in Naples, Italy, during the 18th century, with the addition of tomatoes as a topping.
